IRONMAN 70.3 Mamaia · Romania: 87 km bike leg, 303 m of climbing. Elevation profile, what the terrain asks of you, the weather this race day usually brings, and how to pace this course.
Course intel
A single-loop flat race on the Black Sea coast: from the Mamaia resort the course uses the wide roads around Mamaia and Constanța, and the organizers pitch it as a fast course where you settle into the aero position and ride steadily for long stretches. The whole route stays below 45 m, with just one gentle rise and fall of about 40 m between 40 and 60 km; the rest is almost dead flat. It comes down to aero drag and rhythm, and the sea breeze in late September is the biggest variable: hold your power into the headwind and relax with the tailwind.

Speed score
Rolling terrain is where you overspend without noticing: 20 extra watts on every little rise adds up and empties your legs for the back half. Let power touch the top of the range on the small stuff and leave it there.
Historical race-day weather (around 09-26): 17.0°C · Wind 2.6 m/s
0 to 100, and the higher it is the easier it is to post a good time. Points come off for terrain, for corners, and for the heat and wind this race has actually had over the last five years at the same time of year. Full explanation in the article “How the course score works”.
